About
I have worked at DNAinfo since May 2015, and I interned there twice while a journalism major at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Ill. I primarily cover breaking news and crime with a focus on homicides and shootings.
I have covered national events like the protests over the police shooting death of Laquan McDonald and the CEO of Chicago Public Schools pleading guilty to corruption charges in 2015. I have also focused on human interest stories that highlight the people hardest hit by the city’s violence, covering mothers slain in front of their children and the assassination of a 9-year-old boy, but also showcasing the way communities have rallied to fight violence and injustice.
I regularly take photos, produce videos and participate in radio segments for DNAinfo. I have designed newspaper pages and created interactive graphics and maps for DNAinfo’s website.
I have participated in radio segments for BBC, WGN, WBEZ and other stations. I can be reached at my email, KBauer@DNAinfo.com. Find me on Twitter as @BauerJournalism.
History
During my time at the Northern Star (2011-2015), I exposed questionable university spending and shed a light on the obstacles faced by undocumented students.
I have received national and state recognition for news and feature writing and page design, among other things.
